Recently, EB-LINK conducted an item-by-item review of the 100G optical fiber interconnection upgrade project between buildings in a large data center in East China. This project replaced the old multi-mode backbone between three computer rooms with 100G single-mode links. The cutover window was tight, and all 18 links were completed within 15 minutes without affecting the business. The core of the review was the window arrangement. For project details, see100G optical fiber interconnection upgrade between buildings in a large data center in East China.

How to remove the window: first ask how long the business can be stopped

The center hosts government cloud and financial disaster recovery, and the allowed interruption red line for each link is 15 minutes. The team first conducts a test run of spare parts and gradually times the time, and sets each action to a standard duration. The timeout links are either merged or moved out of the window, and the formal window is scheduled only after the process is finalized.

Only cut one piece at a time and leave a retreat path on the spot

  • The new link should be opened first and run for 72 hours on trial basis, and only if the bit errors are clear can we talk about reversing the flow;
  • Only one link is moved in each window, and the old 40G channel hot backup is not removed;
  • If any step times out, it will immediately roll back without any hesitation;
  • Operate and check in pairs, and go through the entire process the night before.

The window list is solidified into a ledger

After the cutover is completed, the window start and end times of each link, the personnel present, and the re-measured optical power are all entered into the ledger, and are mutually indexed with the port core correspondence table, so they can be traced back at any time afterwards. According to the review criteria, similar link interruptions have not occurred again after the transformation.
