Recently, EB-LINK delivered a batch of data optical transceivers to a provincial highway tunnel monitoring system to stably transmit RS485 control signals from fans, lighting and vehicle detectors along the line to the monitoring center.

Why replace RS485 with optical fiber transmission?

Tunnel power distribution tunnels and vehicle detectors are often one or two kilometers away from the monitoring center. The speed of RS485 twisted pair is forced to be low at this distance. It is also susceptible to inductive interference from frequency converters and power cables, causing occasional disconnections. After switching to optical fiber, the signal is transmitted by optical pulses, which is completely isolated from ground potential difference and lightning strike induction. The reliability of communication over long distances is significantly improved, and there is no need to install additional relays in the middle.

Delivery results and follow-up

The on-site debugging passed in one go, and the bit error rate was significantly lower than that of the original copper cable solution. Operation and maintenance only needed to press the indicator light to locate the faulty section. EB-LINK maintains spot inventory for this model and supports working day technical response. Subsequent tunnel lighting and ventilation expansions can continue to use the same optical transceiver platform and reduce the types of spare parts. This batch of deliveries once again verified the maturity of RS485 data optical terminals in long-distance industrial communications, and also provided a replicable configuration reference for the fiber-optic transformation of tunnel electromechanical systems.
