Customized coding allows third-party optical modules to smoothly enter multi-brand networks, but the cost of writing incorrect coding is often underestimated. Once the wrong code type is selected for a batch order, the loss may be the processing period of an entire box of modules. The following explains the consequences, judgment and fallback path thoroughly.

Three typical symptoms of wrong coding

  • The port is not recognized or slows down after being recognized: the manufacturer field or rate identifier is written incorrectly, for example,SFP+ 10G single-mode dual-fiber 10km optical moduleWrite it in Gigabit code and plug it into the 10G port;
  • The link can be connected but the log alarms continue: the alarm threshold area is written as the default value, and the normal reading is judged to have exceeded the limit;
  • DDM readings are significantly distorted or all zeros: the diagnostic calibration area is overwritten and the switch is calculating the wrong value.

First determine whether it is a code problem or a light path problem.

Try changing the same module to a switch of a known matching brand: if the symptoms disappear, the coding problem can basically be identified; if the symptoms remain unchanged, return to link attenuation and end-face cleaning for troubleshooting. You can also use a code writer to read back the entire page of bytes and compare it field by field with a known correct module of the same code type. This step is critical. Rewriting cannot solve wavelength inconsistencies and insufficient link budgets. Define the boundaries first and then start.

Boundary of rollback: The identification area can be rewritten, but random writing in the reserved area is difficult to recover.

The identification area and alarm area of conventional modules support repeated rewriting, and the same module can change the code pattern multiple times; however, if the manufacturer's serial number area or hardware reserved area is written as an illegal value, some switches will record it and continue to deny service, making it difficult for individuals to repair. Without a complete code library and a professional code writer, it is not recommended to do batch operations by yourself. EB-LINK's free coding customization is programmed one by one according to the order, read back and verified, and tested one by one before shipment. Proofing and confirmation are done before batching to avoid writing errors in the entire batch.

Do not rashly self-burn modules that have been written with wrong codes. First confirm the scope of damage before deciding to rewrite or repair. If you need assistance with diagnosis, you can call 0755-83179002 and provide symptoms and log screenshots.
