During the 100G upgrade of a large data center in East China, the old multimode links in the backbone between buildings were entirely replaced by single-mode links, but a large number of multimode fiber cores and jumpers in the building were retained. How much to dismantle and how much to retain are questions that must be answered in every type of multi-mode to single-mode project. Here is a review of the judgment process at that time. See the case100G optical fiber interconnection upgrade between buildings in a large data center in East China.
Measure the distance first, then talk about reuse
The distance between buildings is 1.8 to 6.2 kilometers, and the nominal capacity of the 40G SR4 multi-mode solution is limited to a few hundred meters. The original link is already tight, and errors are reported in batches during high temperatures in summer. Once the distance exceeds the wavelength window of multi-mode, the fiber core cannot be reused no matter how good the condition is. Single-mode is a safer choice; short-distance links in buildings are another matter.
Core-by-core conducts physical examination on the remaining links
- Measure the actual attenuation of each core and compare it with the design budget. If the margin is insufficient, it is recommended to downgrade;
- End face inspection and adapter cleaning, oxidation or dirty re-end;
- During the 24-hour traffic test run, those with accumulated bit errors will no longer play the backbone role.
Downgrade and reuse, don't tear it down across the board
This project organized the OM3 short-distance links and multi-mode jumpers in the building and transferred them to the out-of-band management network and test network. The 10G multi-mode modules were moved to non-critical locations for access.LC-LC 10G multi-mode OM3 two-core jumperIt is a common carrier for reserved links. A small number of cores that fail the physical examination are re-welded into ends in the building, and the cost is much lower than re-laying. No similar interruptions occurred after the transformation, indicating that the multi-mode assets still had residual value when the judgment was in place.
