When deploying wireless APs in building conference rooms and open office areas, the backhaul link often becomes a shortcoming: the distance from Category 5 lines to the AP has an upper limit of 100 meters, and the measured load of high-power Wi-Fi 6/7 APs is close to Gigabit. It is a common practice in transformation to bring the optical signal as close as possible to the AP.

Calculate the distance first and then determine the speed

The upper limit of the Ethernet copper cable is 100 meters. Including the bridge bypass, the design value generally does not exceed 80 meters; if it exceeds the limit, it will be changed to optical backhaul, Gigabit access on the AP side, and termination on the weak current room side. When multiple APs are aggregated on a floor, it is recommended to reserve 10 Gigabit capacity for the upstream segment, such as side plug-in of the switch.SFP+ 10G single-mode dual-fiber 10km optical module, to avoid getting stuck at the return port after installing the AP.

Jumpers are selected according to wiring level

  • Short-distance cross-connection between rack and weak current is availableLC-LC 10G multi-mode OM3 two-core jumper.
  • The cross-floor backbone is single-mode, and the terminal box and AP side terminal have a unified LC interface.
  • Line segments that are exposed on the ceiling and shaft are replaced with armored jumpers for mechanical protection.

Return transmission and power extraction should be planned together

Optical fibers are non-conductive, so APs still need to draw power from a nearby PoE switch or indoors. The power point must be determined first and then the optical path. When laying out cables, two extra cores should be placed on each layer for backup. There is no need to open a new shaft for subsequent additions of APs. After the transceiver is put into the rack for centralized power supply, the link status can be determined by inspecting the lights; try to place the power point and the optical terminal box adjacent to each other on the same floor to shorten the equipment lines.

The order of transformation is: determine the power supply, determine the medium, then determine the speed and modules, and in turn, mostly rework. EB-LINK can provide complete configurations of 10G modules and jumpers according to floor scale.
