After selecting the chip and speed, it is not uncommon for the project to end up stuck on a piece of iron. There are two types of network card baffles: half-height and full-height, corresponding to different chassis. You must check before placing an order. If it cannot be installed, it will be useless.
Two types of baffles correspond to two types of chassis
The half-height bezel is about 79 mm in height and is used with short PCBs for 1U and 2U rack servers and small hosts; the full-height bezel is about 120 mm and is used in tower workstations and chassis above 4U. A common practice in the industry is to have a half-height baffle pre-installed at the factory and a full-height baffle included in the box. It is most secure to have both pieces ready; for replacement, you only need to unscrew two screws and align the chute. Intel series network cards listed on EB-LINK, fromPCI-EX8 10 Gigabit single electrical port network card (Intel 82599 chip)The E810 high-speed cards are all supplied in the half-height format common in rack servers. It is still recommended to indicate the chassis model on the purchase order for review.
In addition to height, heat dissipation and power consumption must also be considered
- The full-load power consumption of a 100G network card is significantly higher than that of a 10G card. For dense deployment of 1U, it is necessary to confirm that the air duct and adjacent slots generate heat.
- The half-height space between blade chassis and barebones is often limited, and cards with large heat sinks may not be able to close the cover.
- For fanless industrial computers, priority is given to low-power consumption, and single ports are selected to reduce total heat generation when necessary.
Three-line checklist before placing an order
Write the chassis model, available PCIe slot specifications (length and generation), and expected bezel height into a three-line list and send it to the supplier, which is much smoother than having to exchange the goods after they arrive. In industrial sites with high temperature and dustproof requirements, the operating temperature range of the network card must be confirmed separately. Industrial-grade devices generally cover minus 40 to 85 degrees Celsius, and commercial grade devices usually range from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.
