The distribution frame is the main transfer port of the optical fiber link in the computer room. Misselection often requires the entire row of cabinets to be reworked. This article focuses on three things: capacity estimation, bending radius and structural form. It explains clearly how to choose an ODF patch panel and helps the project avoid two common pitfalls: insufficient ports and pigtail stress during the procurement stage.
First estimate the capacity based on the number of trunk cores, and then discuss the port price.
On the incoming line side, first look at the number of optical cable cores: 12, 24, and 48 cores are common in park backbones, and 96 cores or even higher in aggregation equipment rooms. The 1U height of a rack-mounted ODF generally accommodates 24 or 48 LC ports. It is recommended that the selection be based on the estimated business expansion in the next three years, leaving a 20% margin. If the capacity is underestimated, reinstallation will require secondary construction. The cost of the power outage window in the computer room is often higher than the price difference of a patch panel itself.
The bending radius is hidden in the fiber disc area design
The core indicator of ODF is not the number of ports, but whether the bending radius can be maintained in the fiber area: static bending of single-mode pigtails is generally not recommended to be less than 30 mm. The 1550 nm window is particularly sensitive to bending, and additional losses increase when the radius is small. When selecting, check whether there are cable management teeth and fiber storage rings at the corners of the splicing disk, and whether the pigtail outlet is fixed with a sheath. This determines whether the construction team is willing to tidy up the fiber disk.
Fixed type or pull-out type depends on the frequency of operation and maintenance
In computer rooms with frequent port hopping and testing, the pull-out type is convenient for maintenance; in small computer rooms that are only accessible and cannot be exited, the fixed type saves budget. In scenarios where SC and LC are mixed, the adapter model must be checked in advance, such asLC-SC single mode dual core jumperThe interfaces on both sides must be aligned.
