The more optical module specifications there are in the spare parts cabinet, the greater the risk of sluggishness and mis-ordering. The general idea is to converge the main scenarios to one or two levels, and calculate the edge scenarios separately. The premise is that this gear is selected accurately and used within limits.

Why it's worth converging to the universal profile

On-site fault replacement requires delivery time: it is much faster to find a ready-to-use module than to wait for a specific model to be replenished. The value of the universal file lies in its high coverage: the same specifications can be used on multiple devices of multiple brands, the level of spare parts can be lowered, scrap and sluggishness are reduced simultaneously, and warehouse management is also diluted. For campus and factory networks with few link types, convergence benefits are particularly direct.

Three usage boundaries of universal files

  • The rate must be aligned first: Gigabit access canSFP Gigabit single mode dual fiber 10KM optical moduleSet as the main file, with 100M low-speed remote as a separate optionSFP 100M single mode dual fiber 20KM optical module, the two cannot replace each other;
  • The distance profile should be high or low only within the budget: the main profile should leave a margin in the measured attenuation budget. If the distance exceeds the number of kilometers, long-distance models should be allocated separately, and edge links should not be stuffed into the general pool;
  • Short links to prevent light receiving overload: When the general-purpose gear is used on very short links, the light may be too strong. The method is to press the fixed optical attenuator back to the middle of the range instead of risking long-term critical operation.

The ledger is managed at two levels: main file and marginal file.

Once the general file is set, the ledger is recorded at two levels: the main file is set with a safe water level and quarterly inventory, and the marginal file is prepared according to the project order and written off upon acceptance. Modules of the same grade are coded separately and stored in separate pools according to the switch brands in use. When picking up modules, check the pool labels to avoid discovering incorrect code types only when you arrive at the site.

Wolflight's suggestion is to first calculate the distribution of faulty replacement models in the past year before setting a schedule: usually the first three models can cover most replacement scenarios, and the remaining specifications are incorporated into make-to-order purchases.
