The environment of a student dormitory is more complicated than that of an office building: four devices in a dormitory are turned on at 24 o'clock, the corridors have a large flow of people, and the open lines are easy to be kicked and bitten by rats. Whether the dormitory FTTR goes smoothly to the room or not, the key lies in advance planning of three things: light splitting point, jumper protection and bandwidth allocation.

Where is the light splitting point placed?

A common practice is to place the splitter box in the fire escape or corridor, covering half of the floor at 1:8 or 1:16, and the room fiber is pulled straight out of the box. The closer the splitter box is to the room, the shorter the backbone, and the better the control of 1310nm uplink loss; however, it is necessary to avoid sharing the same box and management with strong and weak currents. The same route for strong and weak currents will leave hidden dangers for future operation and maintenance. The trunk and branch cores are numbered in pairs according to the room number and are labeled in two copies, leaving one copy each for the box and panel.

Jumper protection determines repair rate

Most network problems in dormitories occur at the room end. It is recommended to use the clear paragraph insteadSingle-mode single-core armored jumpers, anti-mouse jumper pigtails, special jumpers for Internet cafes, special jumpers for cabinets, add metal sheathing to end protection, and then press the wire trough along the wall; the materials entering the room are unified with SC heads, and mixing LC and SC is the source of many intermittent problems.

How to divide bandwidth

  • Estimated based on the per capita peak value of 100M, a four-person room is about 400M; a 2.5G PON port carries 16 rooms, and 30% concurrency at night is generally sufficient.
  • Special rooms such as e-sports and live training are allocated separate ONUs and are separated from the light splitting group.
  • Record the initial received light power at each point as the baseline. If it drops by more than 3dB, check the jumpers and connectors.
