For a patch cord with a nominal insertion loss of 0.3dB, the actual measurement may be 0.15dB, or it may be close to 0.5dB. The difference is not in the parameter list, but in the centering accuracy and end surface grinding quality of the ceramic ferrule. These two points determine the lower limit of a jumper.

Losses come from three alignment errors

The single-mode fiber core is only about 9 microns. When two fibers are butted, if the core is laterally offset, the angle is uneven, or there is a gap between the end faces, loss will be introduced. The accuracy of the inner hole of the ceramic ferrule determines whether the fiber core can be aligned and is the physical basis for low insertion loss. The larger the hole, the greater the offset. The concentricity between the ferrule and the adapter is also critical.

Grinding determines end face quality

The ferrule must be correct and the end face must be good. The grinding process affects both contact and reflection.

  • Steps and scratches will scatter light, increasing insertion loss and accompanying reflections.
  • Poor APC bevel grinding will cause the contact surface to deviate, resulting in poor return loss.
  • Fitting tolerances within the adapter affect stability after repeated mating and unmating.

Use actual measurement data to screen out defective products

It is recommended to conduct random testing by batch and pay attention to the loss distribution rather than just looking at the average value: batches where the average value meets the standard but exceeds 0.5dB in some cases are often hidden in connector consistency problems. This type of jumper has little impact on short distances, but will accumulate segment by segment on long links with cascaded multi-hops.

When selecting parts, it is more reliable to see whether the manufacturer gives out numbers one by one than to look at promotional numbers.
