The value of the ring topology lies in the detour when the link is broken, and who performs the detour and whether the fault can be seen depends on whether the device is managed. In the on-site consultations received by EB-LINK technical support, this question occurs very frequently, and the answer is not one-size-fits-all.
First determine whether anyone will know immediately after the link is broken.
Unmanaged devices are plug-and-play, do not participate in protocols, and do not report alarms. A broken link is often not discovered until it is shut down. If the factory requires someone to be on site within ten minutes after a fault occurs, manual inspections are barely enough. In scenarios such as continuous production lines and unattended stations, alarm reporting of network-managed equipment is basically a mandatory requirement, otherwise redundant actions will become a black box. In practice, we only need to ask the operation and maintenance team: Who will receive the notification within a few minutes when the link is disconnected? If the answer is no one, the purchase cost saved by the non-managed type will be eaten up by the repair time.
Let's see if we should separate image traffic from control traffic.
When vision cameras, PLCs and office terminals share the same trunk, VLANs need to be divided and broadcast domains restricted. This type of operation is only supported by management devices.Industrial automation and machine vision network solutionsThe port isolation recommendations in can be directly applied. If only one or two cameras are connected to the end station, unmanaged processing100M single-mode dual-fiber one-optical four-electrical fiber optic transceiverCan usually run too.
Three trade-offs when budget is limited
- The trunk ring uses the managed type, and the branch ends remain unmanaged, leaving the fault domain on the trunk.
- The key is to select a model with an SFP slot in the cabinet. The optical module can be pulled out for testing and the wavelength can be changed.
- Reserve a mirror port so that packet capture and troubleshooting do not require rewiring later.
If you are unsure about the model selection, send the number of ports, distance between cabinets, and whether an alarm is needed to 0755-83179002. Technical support will give you a configuration list based on on-site conditions.
