Packet loss and intermittent network disconnection are the most difficult faults to detect in transceivers: the link is not completely disconnected, the indicator light is often normal, but the service is stuck from time to time. Follow the five steps below to eliminate them from easy to difficult. The root cause of most problems can be located in the first four steps.

The first three steps: power supply, jumpers, connectors

  1. Replace the confirmed power adapter, or move the device to a known normal slot for a test run; unstable power supply is the number one cause of intermittent freezes.
  2. Replace a confirmed jumper to eliminate random packet loss caused by the old fiber core being slightly bent or half-broken.
  3. Unplug the connector, clean it with alcohol cotton, and plug it in tightly. The dB level attenuation caused by the oil film on the connector is the most subtle and common.

Step 4: Measure the light intensity and record the fluctuations

A single reading cannot explain the problem. It is recommended to observe and record it for more than ten minutes during the peak traffic period. If the light receiving power drops periodically by more than 2dB, focus on checking the flange movable connector and the main optical fiber coiling; in the outdoor section, also check whether water has entered the downpipe. Water vapor will cause a sudden increase in joint loss. When old 100M equipment is mixed with new Gigabit equipment, half-duplex speed negotiation can easily cause regular packet loss, so fix them to full-duplex and the same speed range and then observe.

Step 5: Check the ambient temperature and interference

  • If the temperature of the touch shell rises, shade or increase ventilation at points that have been high for a long time.
  • The parallel laying of industrial field network cables, frequency converters and power cables is a high incidence point of packet loss. Please refer to the use of optical fiber isolation.Industrial automation and machine vision network solutions.
  • Since thunderstorms occur intensively on the same day, priority should be given to checking the status of grounding and lightning protection devices.

When there is still no conclusion after completing the five steps, replace the spare parts and send the faulty machine back to the manufacturer for retesting, and use data to identify the root cause.
