The optical module in the outdoor cabinet is hot to the touch in summer, but frequently disconnects in the early morning in winter. This type of problem is most likely due to the wrong temperature level selection. Commercial-grade and industrial-grade modules have the same speed and appearance. The difference lies in the design operating temperature and parameter stability at high temperatures. The price difference of tens of dollars if you choose the wrong one often requires a whole year of operation and maintenance to pay off.
The meaning of the two temperature levels
The working temperature of commercial-grade (also written as commercial temperature) modules is generally 0℃ to 70℃, which is suitable for constant temperature environments such as air-conditioned computer rooms and office building weak current rooms; industrial-grade modules cover -40℃ to 85℃, using industrial-grade optoelectronic devices and wider temperature compensation circuits, and are suitable for outdoor cabinets without temperature control, underground pipes and occasions with large temperature differences between high and low temperatures. If the I or T suffix is marked on the specification page, it usually refers to the temperature grade. Please check it with the model name before placing an order.
The practical impact of temperature on light performance
- Low temperature side: It is difficult for ordinary devices to start up below 0°C. The laser wavelength moves downward with temperature, and bit errors increase when the receiving end filtering does not match;
- High-temperature side: After exceeding 70°C, the luminous power decreases and the consumption ratio deteriorates. If the temperature reported by DDM continues to be close to the top, aging will be accelerated;
- For links with large temperature drift, the link budget must be re-calculated, and the worst values at both high and low ends shall be calculated once;
- Industrial grade is not simply "widening the range". The cost lies in materials, compensation circuits and high and low temperature testing one by one.
Which scenarios are recommended to go directly to the industrial level?
The judgment standard is very simple: you cannot control the winter and summer temperatures where the module is located, so configure it according to industrial grade. Monitoring boxes at highway tunnel entrances and substation communication cabinets are typical scenarios, please refer toOptical isolation transformation of communication network in a 220kV substationSelection records; the temperature difference between the industrial field control network and the machine vision production line is the same, so it is recommended to cooperate when networking.Industrial automation and machine vision network solutionsSelect models by location. For a constant-temperature computer room, you don't have to pay extra for the unused temperature range, just commercial grade plus reasonable heat dissipation. EB-LINK industrial-grade modules undergo high and low temperature testing one by one before shipment. If you are not sure about the selection, please call 0755-83179002.
