Often the most expensive item in a network retrofit is not the equipment but the rewiring. Old cables do not have to be dismantled when they reach the end of their life. According to actual measurement and evaluation of transmission capabilities, a considerable number of them can continue to serve existing or upgraded services.

Network cable: Discuss the speed first and then decide whether to stay or not

Category 5 lines are usually stable when running between 100M and 1000M; if you want to go to 10G, it depends on the wire gauge and link length. Experience shows that most Category 5e under normal conditions can stably negotiate to 2.5G within 100 meters, and some links can reach 5G. 10G needs to be tested one by one. The evaluation action is not complicated: use a multi-rate electrical interface network card to talk about the speed link by link. If it can reach the target rate without retransmission, just keep it.

Optical cable: measure attenuation first before discussing reuse

Old optical cables focus on three sets of data: fiber core light transmission rate, bidirectional insertion loss and end face status. Single-mode fiber core attenuation of a few tenths of a decibel per kilometer is within the normal range, and it can be reused if there is margin in the end-to-end budget. If the grade of the old multi-mode line is unknown, short-distance actual measurement verification should be carried out according to the target rate. If it fails, replace it first.LC-LC 10G multi-mode OM3 two-core jumperThis kind of end jumper still cannot solve the problem of moving the main trunk, so as to avoid re-routing the entire section as soon as it comes up.

Pipes and power supplies: the most overlooked reuse items

  • Priority should be given to threading new lines if there is room in the bridge and pipe holes to avoid reopening the wall and breaking the ground. Keep the traction ring when threading;
  • Check the load of the existing UPS and power distribution circuit before extending it. Add new points to get power nearby, and do not expand the power distribution transformation at will;
  • The weak current interconnection wiring strip and distribution frame can be re-terminated, welded in place at one time and the loss value recorded.

A label account must be established for the old lines that have been evaluated: it is clear at a glance which cores and which circuits are available, so that they can be reused only after subsequent expansion.
