The optical link between the studio and the command center is often used for more than ten years, and jumpers and branches are constantly added along the way. Making a loss budget during the design stage can avoid having to replace more expensive modules later to save the day.

Three basic amounts of budget

The module's luminous power, receiving sensitivity and maximum overload power determine the available attenuation range. With common Gigabit single-mode dual fiber 10 km specifications (such asSFP Gigabit single mode dual fiber 10KM optical module) for example, the available attenuation is generally between 8 dB and 10 dB; when the distance across the building exceeds 10 km, useSFP+ 10G single-mode dual-fiber 40km optical moduleFor this type of long-distance specification, the fiber attenuation constant is also checked.

Fill in each loss item in the table

  • Connectors and adapters: 0.3 dB to 0.5 dB per active connection point, twice at each end of the patch panel.
  • Welding point: individually calculated from 0.05 dB to 0.1 dB. Welding loss is confirmed by OTDR spot test.
  • Optical cable itself: Commonly used single-mode optical fiber 1310 nm is about 0.35 dB/km, 1550 nm is about 0.22 dB/km.
  • Jumpers: Multiple jumpers in the cabinet are easily overlooked. It is recommended to use them in one place.LC-FC single mode dual core jumperetc. to adapt to the specifications of the patch panel connector.

Headroom is as important as overload

After the calculation is completed, it is recommended to leave a 3 dB margin to cover future end-face cleaning, temporary addition of jumpers and device aging. On the other hand, if a short link of tens of meters is directly connected to a long-distance module, the receiving end will be pushed into the overload zone. After long-term operation, the sensitivity will degrade, manifesting as occasional frame loss rather than complete failure. This type of problem is the most difficult to detect. If the indicators are not accurate, you can provide the link distance, number of connectors, and module specifications to EB-LINK technical support, and use the formula to calculate whether you need to add an attenuator or change the distance gear.
