Among monitoring failures during thunderstorms, port burning and repeated restarts are mostly related to induction thunder. Power extraction and lightning protection must be designed together: where the photoelectric dividing point is placed, which section the surge protection is installed, and how much the grounding resistance is controlled, all can be checked.
Optical cable entering the pole does not mean lightning entering the equipment room
Optical fiber is a medium, and induction lightning will not conduct along the core of the fiber. The real entrance is the section of the network cable and power supply line hanging below. In the design, the optoelectronic demarcation point is placed in the pole side box, so that only the optical fiber is passed before the demarcation point, the current path is left on the outdoor side, and only the optical port is reserved on the side entering the computer room. Three details about protection and grounding
- Select a signal lightning arrester that matches the port speed on the network cable side, install it before the cable enters the equipment, and connect the grounding short wire to the pole equipotential row nearby.
- Power supply level protection is installed at the power supply incoming line, and it shares a set of down conductors with the box. The ground resistance is generally controlled to be no more than 4Ω, and the equipotential connection is made with the lightning protection ground.
- The metal reinforcement of the armored optical cable is grounded at a single point at the box entry to avoid grounding at both ends to form a loop. The lower lead section is mechanically protected by an armored jumper.
Construction and post-storm review
Lightning protection devices are consumable parts. After each thunderstorm season, the status indication and leakage current changes must be reviewed. Don't wait for the area to go offline to discover that it has failed. Route the wiring inside the box to avoid running the power cord and network cable too long in parallel to reduce interference caused by inductive coupling. When encountering an area where multiple points are disconnected at the same time, EB-LINK technical support generally checks the grounding and boundary locations before configuring.
