Monitoring renovations in parks and factories often pull optical cables near poles, and then connect network cables to cameras. The optical fiber itself is not conductive. The first half of the link is only responsible for data and the second half also transmits power. How this connection is designed will directly affect the trend of the later failure rate.

Three-stage tasks for hybrid links

From the computer room to the pole side is the optical fiber section, which is responsible for transmitting the data completely, ranging from tens of meters to several kilometers; the pole side equipment is the photoelectric conversion section, which restores the optical signal to an Ethernet port; the remaining network cable section carries both data and power. The network cable segment of 802.3af/at is designed to be within 100 meters. The actual recommended length is 60 to 80 meters, leaving margin for bending, reservation and maintenance.

Which side is more reasonable to place the power supply on?

  • Centralized power supply on the pole side: There are few maintenance points and short circuits. It is suitable for continuous rows of points. The transceiver with power supply capability sends power to the network port hanging down.
  • Unified power supply in the computer room: UPS is centralized, and the video will not be lost after a power outage, but the current has to travel through the entire network cable section, and the voltage drop and line loss increase together.
  • Drawing power from street lamps or boxes nearby: construction is fast and investment is low, but there are more risk points for leakage and lightning strikes, and protective measures need to be listed point by point.

Draw a clear line between data and electricity

The location of the optoelectronic dividing point, the type and length of the cables on both sides of the dividing point should be clearly stated on the drawing to avoid pulling the network cable to 130 meters during construction, or stuffing excess fiber on the pole. The shape of the rod side can be selected according to the point density:Gigabit single mode single fiber 1 optical 1 electrical + 1 optical 2 electrical fiber optic transceiverSuitable for one device with two directions, single port point useGigabit single mode single fiber one optical one electrical fiber optic transceiver.
