Ring networking can either use a pair of fiber cores to run bidirectionally, or it can run bidirectionally on one core. The differences between the two methods in the number of cores, troubleshooting difficulty, and device costs often affect later operation and maintenance more than the price difference of the switch itself.
The link margin of the dual-fiber ring is better measured
The dual-fiber ring has one core in each direction, with separate transmission and reception. Each node can use an optical power meter to read the light receiving values in both directions. It is clear at a glance whether the link budget is sufficient. The price is that paired fiber cores are occupied. When pipes or overhead resources are tight, the number of cores required is directly doubled.Gigabit single mode dual fiber one optical one electrical fiber optic transceiverDevices belonging to this category. Dual-fiber also has an implicit benefit. When adding new nodes, there is no need to recheck the wavelength pairing during capacity expansion.
Single-fiber ring saves cores but hard to find bad pixels
A single fiber bidirectionally runs two wavelengths on one core, saving half the fiber core.Gigabit single mode single fiber one optical one electrical fiber optic transceiver and 100M single mode single fiber one optical one electrical fiber optic transceiverThey all work in this paired manner. When deploying, make sure the wavelengths at both ends are complementary. The disadvantage is that the same fiber is used for sending and receiving, and the fault in the middle section can only be located by replacement method; when a section of pipeline is dug out by external force, it is thrown away in both directions, and the redundancy effect is obviously reduced.
Push backward by pipeline resources
- New pipelines with sufficient number of cores: Priority is given to dual-fiber rings for intuitive operation and maintenance.
- There is only one spare core left: use a single fiber ring, pay attention to the transmission distance and wavelength pairing.
- Renovation of old factories: The number of cores is calculated together with the power taken from the cabinet. Don't just focus on the price of the equipment.
- Links exceeding 20 km: Check whether the attenuation budget is sufficient first, and then discuss single fiber and dual fiber.
