When many users migrated old industrial computer software to a new host, they found that the new motherboard only had a PCIe slot, and the PCI serial card that had been used for ten years could not be inserted. In fact, it is not necessary to eliminate the entire machine during renovation. First, clear the slots, and then follow the following three routes. The installation can usually be completed in ten minutes.

Step 1: Count the slots and port requirements of the machine

Open the case to confirm three things: whether there are any free PCI short slots, the number of PCIe x1 or x4 slots, and how many serial or parallel ports need to be added. It also depends on whether the chassis is full-height or half-height. When installing the card, pay attention to the brackets that come with the box to avoid buying the right card but not being able to fit it into the box.

Route 1: Directly replace it with a PCIe card with similar functions

Originally usedPCI serial card, it can be replaced by a PCIe model with different interfaces and equivalent functions, such asPCI-E to 4 serial port card. The host computer software only recognizes the COM port and does not recognize the bus type. If the port number and parameters are matched, it can be seamlessly taken over, and the old configuration file basically does not need to be changed. If the software has hard-coded the COM number in the configuration of the installation directory, back up the original file before changing the number.

Route 2: Prioritize multi-port cards when slots are tight

Adapter brackets and extension slots are not recommended for use on machines with large vibrations. Poor contacts are more difficult to detect than fewer ports.
