M.2 hard drives have similar appearance. If you plug in a newly purchased expansion card but it is not recognized, it is probably because the protocol or interface bits are not aligned. Before purchasing, learn to look at these three things: the key bit, length and bus protocol of the disc.

NVMe and SATA protocols cannot be confused

The M.2 interface can use SATA channels or PCIe channels. PCIe and superimposed with the NVMe protocol are often referred to as high-speed disks. The upper limit of sequential read and write of SATA protocol disks is usually around 560MB/s, NVMe disks can reach around 3500MB/s under PCIe 3.0 x4, and PCIe 4.0 models generally exceed 5000MB/s. The two have completely different channel requirements for expansion cards.

Look at the Key bit and length number

  • Most consumer-grade NVMe disks are M-key and support PCIe x4 channels;
  • B&M-key is commonly used in SATA protocol disks, and it may not be recognized when inserted into a card that only uses the M-key channel;
  • The length depends on the four-digit number, 2280 is the mainstream, and 22110 is common at the enterprise level. Before purchasing the card, confirm whether the fixed stud position is reserved;
  • Pay attention to the card surface space of the double-sided particle disk. After installing the heat sink, it may hit the chassis.

Select card by protocol and port number

Only two NVMe disk options are availablePCI-EX8 to M.2 dual-port expansion card;Select when only x1 is left on the old server motherboard.PCI-EX1 to M.2 dual-port expansion card;When two types of disks need to be mixed,PCI-EX4 to 2-port M.2+2-port SATA array cardCan manage M.2 and SATA devices simultaneously.

A practical habit: before placing an order, record all three information including the disc model, key bit and motherboard free channel, and check it against the expansion card's adaptation list to ensure that you will not buy the wrong one; you can also send the list to EB-LINK technical support, and the customer service will confirm it one by one according to the models on sale.
