After installing a new network card, the link occasionally disconnects, the delay jitters, and the packet capture is unclear. Many people first doubt the quality of the card or module. In fact, a considerable part of the problem lies in two sets of configurations on the system side: energy saving and offloading. This article explains everything in order.
Turn off all energy-saving items first
In Windows, cancel "Allow the computer to turn off this device" in the power management of the device manager. It is recommended that energy-saving mode, green Ethernet, and EEE in the network card's advanced properties be turned off in server environments. Linux checks the network card runtime PM and PCIe ASPM status. Deep energy saving on some platforms will cause the link to wake up slowly and time out. Energy-saving mis-shutdown on unattended industrial hosts is more subtle, please refer toIndustrial automation and machine vision network solutionsHost configuration baseline processing.
Uninstall function is a double-edged sword
- TSO send segmentation and LRO/GRO receive aggregation can significantly improve throughput, but when troubleshooting, they should be temporarily closed and then look at the original message.
- LRO may cause disorder when passing through certain load balancing or collection devices, but GRO is relatively safe and can be retained.
- When the checksum offload is abnormal, it manifests as intermittent packet loss. You can turn off checksum offload first and reset the position.
Installation baseline in three steps
It is recommended that you do three things when you launch a new card: install it with an official signed driver; turn off energy-saving items in a unified script to form a replicable baseline; keep the uninstall function as default, and try to turn it off one by one to locate problems when problems arise. This is one of the common methods.
